4 Reasons You Must Contact Your Attorney After Being Arrested

If you have been arrested, regardless of what you have done, the first thing you should do is ask for your one phone call. Don’t use your phone call to call your partner, parents or friends, always use it to call a lawyer.

After you’ve been arrested, even if it is only for a small thing, calling a lawyer is a must. Don’t wait until after you are interviewed, call your attorney straight away. Many people don’t heed this advice and go into police interviews without a lawyer present, which is the worst thing you can do.

Don’t make the mistake of waiting until your court date is set to hire an attorney, call them as soon as you can. The sooner you contact your attorney, the better. The longer you leave it, the less they will be able to do for you.

Regardless of what you have been arrested for, here are four reasons calling your attorney immediately is a must.

1. Knowing what you should and shouldn’t say

By contacting your attorney before being interviewed, you will have someone on hand to guide and help you.  Any questions it’s best not to answer, and your lawyer will be there to advise you.

When you have the police hounding you for information, it can be all too easy to say the wrong thing. But with your attorney present, you will have someone there to watch your back and guide you through the interview process.

2. Preserve evidence for trial

Straight after an event has happened, it will be fresh in your mind. This means that you will be able to share all the details with your lawyer, before you start forgetting them. Providing key details of the event could make all the difference to your sentencing, so calling a lawyer is always a must.

People don’t realize how important it is to explain what happened straight after the event, as over time memories fade. Small details that could be recorded on the night of the event could be forgotten a couple of days later.

3. Get a better outcome

Depending on the crime you have committed, in many instances having an attorney present can lead to a better outcome. In circumstances where the crime is minor, often attorneys can negotiate a good outcome without you even having to go to court.

Even if you do have to go to court, by hiring an attorney, you will be looking at a much better outcome. Plus your attorney may even be able to get you bail with Bail Bonds, so that you can await the trial in the comfort of your home, instead of in prison.

4. Peace of mind

Knowing that you have someone to rely on with an amazing knowledge of the legal system is a great way to give you peace of mind. Being arrested can be scary, and it can help having someone there to make things easier.

Not only can a good attorney explain the process to you, but they can also prepare you for what outcome to suspect. In a scary situation, like being arrested, having someone there to help you through it can be a godsend.

If you get arrested the first thing you should always do is call your lawyer. A good lawyer can make the arrest process easier, get a better outcome for you, and also, give you peace of mind.
